China Packing List
1Essential Documents
Always carry physical copies of: valid passport, Chinese visa, travel insurance policy, emergency contacts, hotel bookings for the first night, and the contact details of your tour operator. Email scanned copies to yourself and a trusted person at home. Store the originals in your hotel safe and carry photocopies when sightseeing.
π‘ Tips
- βPassport valid for 6+ months beyond your stay
- βTwo passport-size photos (for visa applications or permits)
- βYellow fever vaccination certificate if arriving from endemic country
- βTibet Travel Permit (provided by us) if visiting Tibet
2Clothing by Season
Spring (MarβMay): Layers β T-shirts plus a light jacket. Temperatures vary widely. Summer (JunβAug): Light breathable clothing, hat, sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen. Avoid shorts in some temples. Autumn (SepβNov): Layers again β light jacket for cool evenings. Winter (DecβFeb): Warm coat, thermal layers, gloves, and hat for northern China. The south stays relatively mild. Comfortable walking shoes are essential year-round β expect 8β15km per day.
π‘ Tips
- βBreak in your walking shoes before the trip
- βQuick-dry fabrics are more practical than denim
- βModest clothing (covered shoulders/knees) for temple visits
- βA small day-pack is essential for carrying water and layers
3Tech & Connectivity
China uses Type A, C, and I power outlets at 220V β bring an adapter if your devices use different plugs. Power banks are essential β long sightseeing days drain phone batteries. Download offline maps (Maps.me or Google Maps offline) before entering China. A VPN app on your phone and laptop is non-negotiable for accessing Western apps.
π‘ Tips
- β20,000 mAh power bank covers a full day
- βType A (US-style) plug usually works without adapter
- βInstall VPN before entering China
- βGoogle Maps offline areas work even behind the Firewall
4What You Can Buy in China
Don't overpack β many items are readily available and cheap in China: bottled water, sunscreen, insect repellent, basic medications, umbrella (or buy a local one for Β₯10), charger cables, earphones, snacks, and toiletries. Major cities have modern pharmacies and supermarkets with international brands. Buying some items locally also supports the local economy and leaves more room in your bag.
