Getting Around China
1High-Speed Trains (the G & D Trains)
China's high-speed rail network is the world's largest, covering 45,000+ km. The G-trains (Gaotie) reach speeds of 350 km/h, making Beijing–Shanghai (1,300 km) a 4.5-hour journey. The D-trains are slightly slower but more extensive. Tickets can be booked on China Railway (12306.cn) or through travel apps. Book 30 days in advance for popular routes, especially around holidays.
💡 Tips
- ✓Second class is comfortable and affordable
- ✓Book Beijing–Xi'an or Beijing–Shanghai tickets early
- ✓Carry your passport — it's required to board
- ✓Arrive 30 minutes early for security checks
2Domestic Flights
China's domestic airline network is extensive. For distances over 1,000 km (e.g. Beijing to Chengdu or Guilin), flying is often the most practical option. Major carriers include Air China, China Eastern, and China Southern. Budget carrier Spring Airlines offers low fares. Apps like Trip.com and Ctrip make booking easy.
💡 Tips
- ✓Check baggage allowances — usually 20–23 kg
- ✓Arrive 2 hours before departure for security
- ✓Domestic airports can be far from city centers
- ✓Weather delays are common — leave buffer time between connections
3City Metro & Public Transport
Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Shenzhen, and 40+ other cities have extensive metro systems — the safest, cheapest, and most reliable way to move around. Fares start from ¥2–3. Reloadable transit cards save time and offer small discounts. Bus networks are comprehensive but harder to navigate without Mandarin.
💡 Tips
- ✓Download the city's official metro app for maps
- ✓Transit cards work across buses and metro
- ✓Avoid metro during 8–9am and 5:30–7pm rush hours
- ✓Most major cities have English signage on metro systems
4DiDi (Ride-Hailing)
DiDi is China's Uber equivalent and works in most Chinese cities. Download the DiDi app and link a foreign credit card or WeChat Pay. DiDi has an 'International' mode that shows destination in Chinese automatically — useful when you can't communicate with drivers. Taxis are also widely available; insist they use the meter.
💡 Tips
- ✓Screenshot your destination address in Chinese to show drivers
- ✓DiDi Express is like UberX; DiDi Premier is premium
- ✓Surge pricing applies at peak times
- ✓Always check the license plate matches the app
