China Visa & Entry Requirements
1Do I Need a Visa?
Most foreign nationals require a visa to enter mainland China. However, China has rapidly expanded its visa-free access program. As of 2026, citizens of 38+ countries (including France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Switzerland, and more) enjoy 15-day visa-free access. Additional 'unilateral visa-free' agreements cover Australia, New Zealand, and several other nations. Check with your nearest Chinese embassy for the most up-to-date list.
272/144-Hour Transit Visa-Free
Even if your country isn't on the visa-free list, you may be eligible for a 72 or 144-hour transit visa exemption if you're transiting through Beijing, Shanghai (Pudong/Hongqiao), Guangzhou, Chengdu, Chongqing, Shenyang, Wuhan, Xi'an, or several other major airports. 4Tibet Travel Permit
All foreign visitors (including Chinese from Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan) require a Tibet Travel Permit in addition to a standard Chinese visa to enter Tibet Autonomous Region. Permits cannot be applied for individually โ you must book through a registered tour operator. 5Hong Kong & Macau
Hong Kong and Macau operate under their own immigration policies, separate from mainland China. Most nationalities can enter Hong Kong visa-free for 30โ90 days and Macau for up to 30 days. If you plan to visit Hong Kong and then enter mainland China, you will need to apply for a China visa beforehand (you cannot get one on arrival).
