China Visa & Entry Requirements

1Do I Need a Visa?

Most foreign nationals require a visa to enter mainland China. However, China has rapidly expanded its visa-free access program. As of 2026, citizens of 38+ countries (including France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Switzerland, and more) enjoy 15-day visa-free access. Additional 'unilateral visa-free' agreements cover Australia, New Zealand, and several other nations. Check with your nearest Chinese embassy for the most up-to-date list.

272/144-Hour Transit Visa-Free

Even if your country isn't on the visa-free list, you may be eligible for a 72 or 144-hour transit visa exemption if you're transiting through Beijing, Shanghai (Pudong/Hongqiao), Guangzhou, Chengdu, Chongqing, Shenyang, Wuhan, Xi'an, or several other major airports. You must hold an onward ticket to a third country.

๐Ÿ’ก Tips

  • โœ“Must hold confirmed onward flight ticket
  • โœ“Stay confined to the permitted transit city area
  • โœ“Beijing and Shanghai offer 144-hour exemptions
  • โœ“Cannot extend or convert to another visa status

3Applying for a Tourist Visa (L Visa)

The standard tourist visa is the L visa. Apply at your nearest Chinese embassy or consulate, or through an authorized visa service. Required documents typically include: valid passport (6+ months validity, 2 blank pages), completed visa application form, passport-size photo, round-trip flight itinerary, hotel bookings or tour confirmation letter, and bank statements. Processing takes 4โ€“7 business days; express service is usually available.

  • โœ“10-year multiple-entry available for US, Canadian, and some other nationals
  • โœ“We provide a tour confirmation letter to support your application

4Tibet Travel Permit

All foreign visitors (including Chinese from Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan) require a Tibet Travel Permit in addition to a standard Chinese visa to enter Tibet Autonomous Region. Permits cannot be applied for individually โ€” you must book through a registered tour operator. Tibet is periodically closed to foreign visitors (typically February and sometimes around sensitive dates). We handle all Tibet permit applications for our Tibet tour clients.

๐Ÿ’ก Tips

  • โœ“Included in all our Tibet tour packages
  • โœ“Cannot visit Tibet independently without a guide
  • โœ“Additional Area Permits required for Everest Base Camp, Ngari, etc.
  • โœ“Apply at least 3โ€“4 weeks in advance

5Hong Kong & Macau

Hong Kong and Macau operate under their own immigration policies, separate from mainland China. Most nationalities can enter Hong Kong visa-free for 30โ€“90 days and Macau for up to 30 days. If you plan to visit Hong Kong and then enter mainland China, you will need to apply for a China visa beforehand (you cannot get one on arrival).
