Internet & Communication in China
1China's Great Firewall
China blocks many popular Western services including Google (Search, Maps, Gmail, Drive), YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Twitter/X, Telegram, and most news sites. This is known as the Great Firewall (้ฒ็ซ้ฟๅ). You'll need a VPN to access these services. Alternatives that work without a VPN: Baidu Maps, WeChat, Bilibili, Weibo, and most hotel streaming services.
2Setting Up a VPN
Download and configure a VPN before you arrive in China โ it is extremely difficult to download VPN apps once inside China. Reputable VPNs with proven China performance include ExpressVPN, Astrill, and NordVPN. Enable the VPN on your phone and laptop, and test it before departure. Some hotels and co-working spaces provide VPN access.
๐ก Tips
- โDownload VPN before entering China
- โTest the VPN connection before leaving home
- โKeep a backup VPN app installed
- โVPN performance varies by city and network
3SIM Cards & Mobile Data
Buying a local SIM card is the most reliable and affordable connectivity option. China Mobile, China Unicom, and China Telecom all offer tourist SIM packages with data and calls. Purchase at the airport or any carrier branch โ bring your passport. International roaming works but is expensive. eSIM options are available from some providers for dual-number convenience.
๐ก Tips
- โAirport SIM counters are convenient but slightly pricier
- โPackages range from ยฅ50โ200 for 30-day unlimited data
- โChina Unicom has the best international connectivity
- โPortable WiFi rental (pocket WiFi) is available at airports
4WeChat โ Essential App for China
WeChat (ๅพฎไฟก) is China's 'super app' โ messaging, payments, restaurant ordering, maps, mini-programs, and more. Create your account before arriving (WeChat now flags new accounts created in China for security review). Link a phone number and, if possible, get verified by an existing user. Use WeChat Pay for seamless cashless payments across the country.
๐ก Tips
- โCreate WeChat account before arriving in China
- โAsk a Chinese friend to verify your account if possible
- โWeChat Translate can translate conversations in real time
- โWeChat Pay now accepts foreign Visa/Mastercard
